  VETERINARY LASER APPLICATIONS

What surgeries can done with a CO2 Veterinary Surgical Laser?

In many procedures, the laser can replace the scalpel and provide a gentler and better alternative to traditional surgery. Laser surgery can correct many common conditions such as cysts, tumors, warts and infections around the eyes, ears, mouth or anywhere on the skin. Specialized internal procedures are also possible.

Here is a list of the most common procedures done with a CO2 Laser:

• Declaw:
Prior to the introduction of the carbon dioxide laser, de-claws were done with a scalpel blade or a nail trimmer.  Unfortunately, the post operative period was painful, especially in older cats who are often bandaged and need a longer recovery time to heal.  The advent of de-claws with the laser surgery has substantially minimized these drawbacks. There is usually no bleeding during the surgery, a tourniquet is no longer used.  Bandages are still used for one day to protect the surgery site from normal activity because the patient feels so good after surgery.  All  declaw patients can go home the next day after surgery.

• Skin Tumor:
Another area where it is highly advantageous to use the laser is removing skin tumors. On some of the small tumors, the lesion can be removed by the laser with only local anesthesia and without sutures.  On larger skin tumors the coagulation of the small blood vessels minimizes operative bleeding. Just like in the de-claw, these pets have less discomfort during the healing period because of the lack of raw nerve endings and less inflammation.

• Dog Neuter:
Routine surgeries like dog neuters can also be performed with the laser. The minimal bleeding and post operative pain control are major reasons to perform this surgery with the laser.

• Ear Hematoma:
The laser works great for ear hematomas because a smaller opening is needed to drain the fluid. This minimizes scarring of the ear. The laser has ability to selectively go through layers of tissue in a gentle and controlled fashion.

Other common procedures that are better performed with a CO2 Surgical Laser:
Mass Removal, Epihoras, Soft Palate Reduction, Entropion, Lick Granulomas, Gingivitis/Stomatitis, Brachyephalic Upper Airway Syndrome, and much more.

A great benefit of using a laser is that the learning curve is very short.  Medisales provides you with all of the necessary tools to incorporate CO2 Surgical Lasers into your practice.
